The first twenty students who have started studying dentistry in Ostrava have joined the faculty.
Among the admitted students there are 15 women and 5 men. All of them come mainly from Moravia and Silesia. Eleven students live in Ostrava or in the surrounding regions. The medical faculty has been waiting a long time for the opening of the study. The accreditation has been granted for three years so far.
The faculty will offer modern facilities for teaching
This year, with significant financial support from the City of Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region, the Faculty of Medicine has built new modern premises in which dental students will prepare for their first two years of practice. They include, for example, a classroom with phantoms on which students will learn individual procedures and train the necessary skills, a dental laboratory and an ambulance with two dental chairs. “Our facilities for theoretical and practical training are well prepared. I am convinced that our Faculty of Medicine in Ostrava together with the University Hospital will bring very high quality graduates into dental practice,” adds the guarantor of the study programme Dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry, doc. MUDr. Martin Starosta.
In the Czech Republic, dentistry can currently be studied at six faculties of universities. At Charles University, the field of Dental Medicine can be studied at three faculties, namely the 1st Faculty of Medicine in Prague, the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen and the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové. At Masaryk University in Brno, the Faculty of Medicine teaches dentistry. In Olomouc there is also a study programme in Dentistry at the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine in Ostrava will now join these faculties.
The faculty will be one of the smaller
The number of dentistry students admitted to study will make the Faculty of Ostrava one of the smaller faculties. For example, 58 students have been admitted to study dentistry at Masaryk University in Brno for the academic year 2023/2024, and 80 students have been admitted to study dentistry at the Faculty of Medicine of Palacký University in Olomouc for this academic year. In addition, the Faculty of Medicine of Palacký University plans to admit as many as 100 students to the dentistry study programme for the next year.
