On Friday, November 8, 2024, the Institute of Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS) published a report on personnel capacity and remuneration in Czech healthcare for the year 2023. The document presents interesting data from the field of dentistry, highlighting various trends—while the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) positions for dentists is slightly increasing, the number of dental technicians is dramatically declining.
Dentists on a Slight Rise
According to the ÚZIS publication, the number of FTE positions for dentists increased to 7,484 in 2023, nearly a hundred more than in the previous year, which recorded 7,386 FTE positions.
Decline in the Number of Dental Hygienists
Dental hygienists also saw a slight year-on-year decline. In 2022, there were 1,498 FTE positions recorded, while in 2023, this number fell to 1,479, a decrease of just under twenty positions. Despite this drop, the number of dental hygienists remains relatively stable and more or less aligns with our forecast (available here).
Size of the Dental Hygiene Market in the Czech Republic – After years of steady growth, the dental hygiene market is approaching saturation. It is expected that in the near future, the vast majority of customers will no longer be able to absorb the increasing supply of dental hygiene services. More details here.
Dental Technicians in Crisis: A 13% Drop
The most significant changes affected dental technicians, who experienced a dramatic year-on-year decline of 13%. While ÚZIS recorded 2,633 FTE positions in 2022, this number fell to 2,296 in 2023, representing a loss of 337 positions—the lowest number in the modern history of dental technology. In the Czech Republic, there are now 2.8 dentists per technician, a higher ratio than in Germany, where there are only 2.2 dentists per technician, and in France, where the ratio is 2.5 dentists per technician.
Dental Technician – A Poorly Paid Profession – Although it is widely believed that dental care is expensive and that workers in dentistry must therefore be well paid, this is not the case. The earnings of non-medical professionals in dentistry are relatively low compared to other healthcare workers. More details here.
A graph and table below illustrate the total number of workers in dentistry.
Occupation | Number of FTE Positions |
---|---|
Dentist | 7 484 |
Dental Hygienist | 1 479 |
